Fit-for-purpose storage: how DomeShelter uses Eco Pallets’ plastic totes to keep mining projects moving

In the mining industry, where conditions are extreme and timelines are tight, the smallest component can be just as critical as the largest piece of equipment. DomeShelter Australia are known to be a specialists in manufacturing fit-for-purpose shelter solutions that protect people and assets from the elements. For them, having a reliable way to store and transport even the tiniest yet critical parts – like nuts, bolts, cables, custom-made components, and printed assembly instructions – is as vital as the shelters themselves.

To understand the shift in how these components are stored, Eco Pallets spoke with DomeShelter Australia’s production team leader, Alex Grigio.

The storage challenge: harsh conditions and tight timelines

“Years ago, these small components were packed in cardboard boxes, which quickly became soggy when left outdoors waiting to get shipped to our customers” Grigio said. Recognising the problem, DomeShelter later moved to imported Euro containers. These were sturdier and had better weather resistance but came at a high cost.

Eco Pallets’ heavy-duty plastic totes: a smarter solution

Looking for a more practical and affordable alternative, DomeShelter turned to Eco Pallets’ heavy-duty plastic totes. Built to withstand the harshest conditions, these plastic totes offered durability, affordability, and peace of mind. “These totes are going to industrial and mining locations – they can’t be brittle and fall apart,” Grigio said. “They’re strapped to our products for the entire journey and arrive on site intact. Nothing goes missing.”

Grigio explained that the plastic totes can remain on site anywhere from a week to over nine months – enduring heat, dust, and UV exposure while continuing to protect their contents. While long-term sun exposure may cause some discolouration, the integrity of the plastic totes remains unaffected and contents are protected.

Choosing the right size for safe handling

DomeShelter has opted for two sizes – the 24L tub, Eco-Tote 102 and the 39L tub, Eco-Tote 103. The two sizes were selected for thoughtful reasons. When fully loaded, the plastic totes stay within a safe, manageable weight of around 20 kg for manual handling – an important consideration for workplace safety. “We lift them physically by hand and we have found that these two sizes best fit our requirements.” Grigio noted.

Custom branding for a professional edge

Beyond functionality, DomeShelter also took care of the aesthetics of the plastic totes. With Eco Pallets’ custom colour and brand stamping options, DomeShelter was able to create a consistent and professional image. “We pride ourselves on the aesthetics of our kit,” Grigio explained. “Branding makes a strong first impression for our customers.” The totes act as both a storage solution and a statement piece that helps reinforce both DomeShelter’s reputation for quality and enhances their brand recognition.

Positive site feedback and practical cautions

Grigio also mentioned that on-site feedback has been positive, with crews noting the plastic totes’ ability to withstand heavy loads without collapsing. Even under significant weight, the base holds firm. The only caution is to avoid overly tight strapping, which can distort the lid and/or body of the tote. Moderate strapping still ensures the plastic totes are secured on Domeshelter’s products and keeps them robust and functional.

The verdict: reliable, cost-effective plastic totes

Summing up their experience, DomeShelter described Eco Pallets’ plastic totes as:

“Fit-for-purpose, practical, simple solutions that meet our requirements – designed well enough to be easy to carry and cost-effective for an item we give out.”

In essence, the plastic totes meet DomeShelter’s operational needs at a cost that’s reasonable considering their durability and utility.

Final thoughts

For DomeShelter Australia, Eco Pallets’ plastic totes have proven to be more than just storage – they are a dependable link in the supply chain, ensuring that critical components arrive protected, organised, and ready for installation.
